Star Wars actor John Boyega has won support for his Hyde Park speech where he called for more parental guidance in black families but just who are Boyega’s own parents?
On May 26th the world was shocked by the death of George Floyd and the video emerged that showed the 46-year-old being pinned to the ground with a police officer kneeling on his back and neck.
Since then, protests have erupted across the US and the wider world, calling for justice for George Floyd and to send out the message that black lives matter.
Here in the UK, one of the most high-profile individuals to take a stand against racism is the Star Wars actor, John Boyega.
Not only has the 28-year-old been hugely outspoken on social media but he also joined the Black Lives Matter protest in Hyde Park on Wednesday, June 3rd.
John Boyega in impassioned Hyde Park speech
As part of the demonstration, Boyega made an impassioned speech to the amassed crowd.
On the verge of tears and almost shaking with anger, Boyega said that: “Black lives have always mattered, we’ve always been important, we have always meant something.”
But as well as demanding justice for George Floyd, Boyega also made a plea to those among him in the crowd.
Boyega said: “Black men, we need to take care of our black women. They are our hearts, they are our future, we cannot demonise our own.”
In 2011, it was reported that in the US, 72% of black children were born to unmarried mothers. Furthermore, a study from Nicole Howell of Olivet Nazarene University suggests that there is a link between crime and single-parent households.
This is what Boyega seems to be alluding to and he concluded his message by saying: “We [black men] are the pillars of the family. Imagine this, a nation that is set up with individual families that are thriving, that are healthy, that communicate, that raise their children in love and have a rate of becoming better human beings.”
Who are John Boyega’s parents?
As a result of his speech, there has understandably been a lot of interest in Boyega’s parents.
John Boyega was born in Peckham in March 1992 to Abigail and Samson Adegboyega.
Boyega revealed in a 2011 interview with the New York Times that Abigail works with disabled people while his father, Samson, is a pentecostal minister – “without the shouting,” he said.
John also added that both of his parents are “film nerds” and that his father, in particular, was “a massive Bruce Willis fan.”
Messages of support
Following John Boyega’s powerful speech on June 3rd, there has been an outpouring of support for the 28-year-old.
Most notably from Star Wars production company Lucasfilm, who tweeted the following.
Mark Hamill, the actor behind Luke Skywalker also stated how proud he was of Boyega’s actions.
Another of Boyega’s Star Wars colleagues, Oscar Isaac, took to Facebook to offer his support.
And on top of that, a whole host of notable filmmakers and writers took to Twitter to back Boyega.
