At only 23 years old, local fashion expert Jason Young has become one the most noted sellers on the resell app Depop.
Young, who achieved the title of a “top seller” during the summer of 2019, said he couldn’t see himself doing anything else.
“I couldn’t imagine not waking up everyday and going thrifting,” he said. “I never thought I’d make a career out of this, but I have.”
In the world of fashion, Young specializes in finding unique pieces of clothing in thrift stores and bringing them back to life with careful washing and detailing with his business Cleveland Thrifter.
“I do everything by myself. I count inventory, thrift everyday, bring the clothes home and wash them, then I model them and post pictures online,” he said. “Once it’s sold, I ship it.”
Originally, Young began his career on Depop by selling clothes and accessories he didn’t use anymore. A lover of fashion, Young had an abundance of clothing and wanted his pieces to go to good homes. That was three years ago.
Since then, Young has seen over 2,500 sales on the app and plans to continue working exclusively with the service.
“It’s a really friendly community,” he said. “Everyone is so nice and I made lifelong friends from there. If you put in the work it always payoffs off on Depop.”
For Young, operating during the pandemic was challenging, but he was able to still succeed. According to Young, on average he has about 500 listings on the app, but during the shutdown he had around 300 listed.
In order to fill up shop listings Young would buy wholesale from friends to keep Cleveland Thrifter operating.
“I love finding clothes that I can put together and make different outfits. It’s like second nature to me now,” he said.
Recently, Young was asked to do an Instagram account takeover for Depop. During his takeover, he answered questions about the app and gave advice to new business owners.
“I was able to give beginner sellers advice on how to operate and start their shops,” he said. “It was an awesome opportunity. I couldn’t be more thankful.
“I’m glad I used my platform to help people get their businesses running on Depop because it can get far with a lot of time and effort.”
In the future Young hopes to open up his own shop and continue selling with Depop. He said his success comes back to Lorain and the love he has for the place he grew up as well as his deep love for clothing.
“I love that you can express yourself without words,” Young said. “Getting dressed every morning is one of the favorite parts of my day.
“I always look to Lorain for inspiration. Seeing where we come from makes me want to do better and be able to give back to Lorain.”
